THE POSITIONSENIOR LIBRARIAN - YOUTH SERVICESUnder limited supervision, plans, coordinates, and supervises the operations for the Santa Barbara Public Library System (SBPL). This position manages, supervises, trains, and evaluates a team of six (6) regular and 2 to 4 hourly staff. Professional library work could include oversight, planning, quality assurance, and operational efficiency for family, youth and teen programming services, and community education, marketing and communication, collection management oversignt and partnership development. Other professional responsibilities may include: participation in strategic planning; public presentaitons; grant funding development and management; development of specialized collection(s) materials and evaluation of collection/customer needs, interests and requests; organizing and leading staff training; gathering, analyzing, and other work as require. The ideal candidate should have public library experience in the area of youth services; two (2) years of supervisory experience, and experience in collection development and managing a collection budget. Work hours are currently: Tuesday and Wednesday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm; Thursday, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm,; Friday and Saturday, 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. These hours are subject to change due to Library needs. The abiliity to communicate in Spanish is highly desirable.The Santa Barbara Public Library is a department of the City of Santa Barbara. Under an Agreement for Operation of a County-Wide Free Library System, in partnership with the County of Santa Barbara, the library also administers Library facilities and services in County branch libraries in Carpinteria and Montecito. Public funding for operations of the library system is received from the City of Santa Barbara, County of Santa Barbara and participating County Cities. Additional revenue sources may include private gifts and donations, financial assistance from the Library Foundation and the Friends of the Library groups, grants and in-kind goods amd services. SBPL is also a member of the Black Gold Cooperative, which serves communities from Santa Paula to San Luis Obispo County. This is an exciting opportunity for candidates with strong leadership skills and experience, gained through hands-on work in a fast-paced, collaborative and creative library environment.EMPLOYMENT STANDARDSEDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE: Desirable experience includes three (3) years of profession experience as a Librarian, including one year in a supervisory capacity. Master's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Library or Information Science or a related field.KNOWLEDGE OF: Public Library services, organization, and equipment; program development, promotion and implementation; methods and principles of supervision and leadership; methods of collection development; and general and specialized research techniques.SKILL IN: Leading professional, paraprofessional and operational staff; establishing appropriate professional relationships; library program planning and promotion; organizing a work unit; collection development; technical reference work; using and maintaining library equipment and tools.ABILITY TO: Effectively supervise staff, and lead a work unit to provide quality public service; coordinate mobile services and community education; assist in meeting the needs of library clientele; assess community needs for library services and encourage participation in new and established programs; develop, monitor and evaluate collection(s) for quality and program effectivenes; mentor others in performing complex librarian duties; communicate effectively orally and in writing; prepare and conduct presentations; write letters and statistical/narrative reports; supervise staff; explain rules, regulations, preocedures and work effectively with a variety of library patrons; make library procedures and policy decisions in accordance with Director's guidelines. Establish and maintain productive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; communicate in a timely, effective, positive and respectiful manner; write accurately and concisely, using proper grammatical form.
