GENERAL SUMMARY: POA Intra-operative: Under general supervision and following established policies and procedures, provides service support for assigned Operating Room (O.R.) area(s) related to services, patient transport, preparation and cleaning of the operating room, cleaning, disinfecting and sterilization of equipment, and patient preparation. Assists O.R. personnel in the positioning and maintenance of patient safety. POA Pre/post-operative: Under general supervision of the registered nurse, will assist the health care team with specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs of the patient. Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures. Provides service support for assigned area(s) related to building services, patient transport and patient preparation. Recognizes and participates in own continuing education. Reports to the Supervisor/Manager/Director. PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Intra-operative POA: * Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, Universal Precautions, safety, environmental and infection control standards. * Transports patients to and from clinical, ancillary, and support department areas as directed. Observes patient's condition during transport and notifies appropriate medical/nursing personnel if problems occur. * Conducts between surgical case rooms cleaning to include cleaning and disinfecting of O.R. tables, instruments, floors, etc., removes and disposes of soiled linens and trash, including the fluid management system. Completes terminal cleaning of O.R. room as needed. * Assists nursing personnel with O.R. room set-up including locating equipment, gathering supplies, and opening sterile supplies. Assists with transport of equipment as needed. Responsible for preparing the room with supplies and equipment as required by the individual needs of the patient, the procedure and the physician. * Maintains utility areas and storeroom in a clean and orderly fashion. Ensures adequate inventory of supplies and may stock supplies as needed. * Stocks and maintains scrub sink area, sub-sterile room, environmental room and other areas of the Operating Room as needed. * Cleans and prepares stretchers and wheelchairs as needed. Reports damaged equipment following established policy and procedure and completes appropriate paperwork. * Identifies transportation needs (i.e., beds, stretchers, and wheelchairs), locates transportation equipment and arranges for retrieval. Delivers transportation equipment as directed. * Maintains cleanliness of hallways and other areas of the operating room. Wet mops floors and halls as needed. Gathers and disposes of trash and other waste materials. * Responsible for changing disinfection solutions and cleaning equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations and hospital's infection control standards. * Transports blood, specimens, cultures, nonnarcotic medications, orders, and requisitions to appropriate destinations. Obtains blood products from the Blood Bank according to policy and procedure. Transports specimens to the lab and maintains appropriate log. Performs other miscellaneous pickup and delivery as requested, such as the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) and pharmacy. * Assists nursing personnel in transferring patients to or from O.R. tables, beds, chairs, wheelchairs or stretchers. Assists nursing personnel in the positioning of the patient and maintenance of patient safety. Assists with the transport of patients when needed. * Demonstrates aseptic technique practices in the operating room environment including sterile gloving, retrieval of sterile supplies, and moving about in a restricted area. * Reports any equipment failures to the department manager and/or the appropriate department. Maintains open communication within the operating room and with other departments. * Assists with monitoring and maintaining inventories of select equipment and accessories including restocking rooms, reporting supply needs, and retrieval of supplies. Provides pick-up and delivery to SPD. * Performs pre-surgical hair removal and skin prep as requested under the direction of the RN. * Provide support to the patient in a professional manner by observation and listening to concerns. Interacts with patients and families, providing them with general information, directions, and assistance as requested. * Conserves use of supplies to ensure cost efficient quality of care. Assures a safe environment through continued alertness to potential hazards and aseptic techniques. * Provides for the orderly and efficient progression of the surgical schedule by communication with other members of the staff. * Provides in-service to personnel with regard to room turnover, cleaning and disinfecting in the operating room. * Maintains communication with staff nurses and department leadership. * May assist with transport of patients. * May assist operating room/recovery room staff in conducting postmortem care and transports deceased patient to the morgue. * May perform general clerical duties related to preparing medical charts and surgical schedules. * Perform other duties as assigned. PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Pre/Post-operative POA: * As directed, assists the RN in admitting, transferring and discharging of patients. * Demonstrates sensitivity to patients' comfort and privacy and expresses interest in their progress. Answers patient questions, and explains procedures when performing. * Provides personal care assistance to patients, including bathing, dressing, feeding, toileting, mobility, comfort and transportation. * Provides therapeutic patient care under the supervision and/or direction of the RN, to include the following duties: * Obtains and reports vital signs * Measures, records, and reports output, including drainage canisters and bags. * Assist in the application of restraints as directed by a registered nurse. * Assist in positioning of patients assuring privacy and safety. * Labels clothing, overnight bags, assistive devices, dentures, etc. and secures. * Follows proper isolation techniques and procedures. * Assist patient in preparation for surgery. * Routine rounding on patients assigned when not directly engaged in patient care tasks. * Maintains safe and clean patient room environment. * Keeps room free from clutter * Cleans and stocks bedside tables * Maintains unit free from excess supplies and linen. * Maintains cleanliness of other assigned areas. * Makes necessary supply deliveries to unit and ancillary departments. * Transports patients to and from clinical, ancillary, and support department areas as directed. Observes patient's condition during transport and notifies appropriate medical/nursing personnel if problems occur. * Performs other related duties as required within scope of practice. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: * High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required. * Minimum of one (1) year experience in surgical services, sterile processing, patient care environment or related departments with similar skill set required. * Medical Assistant and/or Nursing Assistant certification preferred. LICENSURES/CERTIFICATIONS: * Current BLS-A Certification required or become BLS-A certified within one month of job start date.
