Primary Purpose of the Position:
The associate editor contributes to all facets of the production of National Parks magazine, an award-winning quarterly publication about public lands that covers topics ranging from science and history to conservation, wildlife, travel, politics, arts and culture. This person works closely with the small, close-knit magazine team on tasks including story planning, reporting, writing, editing, copy editing, fact-checking, photo research, photo editing, and communication with readers, writers, artists, photographers and photo agencies. The associate editor also assists with innovative digital projects such as multimedia extensions (audio, video, slideshows, etc.) of magazine stories, interactive features, content promotion and new initiatives as they arise. In addition, the associate editor helps research, write and edit blog posts, assists with NPCA's website, and occasionally tackles other editorial projects. Finally, the associate editor provides administrative support in a variety of ways from processing expenses to coordinating meetings, answering phone calls, managing contracts and assisting with production management. In short, we are looking for a gifted reporter, writer and editor who has very strong digital and organizational skills and is uncompromising when it comes to accuracy and detail.
Essential Functions: % of Time
Magazine Core Duties 50%
Contributes to all facets of producing a national magazine with more than 300,000 subscribers. Helps shape, compile, research, report, write and edit articles and sidebars. Compiles and edits letters to the editor and other front-of-the-book items. Oversees fact-checking of all stories. Communicates with readers and responds to freelance queries. Helps cultivate new writers, artists and photographers. Assists with photo research, photo editing and photo captions. Participates in editorial meetings, group photo edits and layout critique.
Online Content Duties 25%
Oversees creation of new digital initiatives at the magazine. Generates cutting-edge ideas and collaborates on video, audio, slideshows, interactive features and other innovative multimedia content and digital storytelling techniques to broaden the impact of the magazine content across digital channels. Manages the posting of the magazine online. Contributes to the creation and publication of NPCA's online content by researching, writing, editing and posting, as appropriate, articles and web pages, blog posts, slideshows, illustrations and interactives. Works within the content management systems of NPCA's web properties to publish and maintain content across digital channels. Helps maintain the accuracy, relevance and effectiveness of core website content. Assists with the promotion of online magazine and website content through NPCA's social channels, Google AdGrant campaigns and other content marketing and lead generation efforts. Assists with additional digital projects to be determined.
Magazine Administrative Duties 20%
Assists with operational facets of the magazine team, including management of meetings, invoices and contracts. Responds to magazine email, postal mail and phone calls. Communicates with ad firm and works with sales representatives to develop media kits, mailings and other products. Negotiates licensing fees with photographers and photo stock agencies. Administers contest submissions. Develops production schedule and produces cover wrap and reader service card. Helps with special projects such as reader surveys and magazine distribution initiatives.
Other Duties 5%
As needed, helps with editorial projects such as ghostwriting for senior staff, conducting research or editing reports.

Minimum Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. (37.5-hour work week)
Minimum Scope of Position: Regular interaction with internal staff as well as external contacts including freelance contributors, story sources and Park Service employees.
Minimum Qualifications, Competencies, Skills, Education, and Traits:
* Superlative reporting, writing, editing and copyediting skills.
* Sound editorial judgment. A nose for stories, an ear for crisp language and an eye for photo selection.
* Creativity of thought matched by talent for innovation in digital projects.
* Digital fluency and familiarity with usability and user experience design principles as they relate to digital storytelling.
* Proven ability to manage time effectively, work accurately and reliably under time constraints, meet deadlines, coordinate multiple projects and produce high-quality work.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively on a team.
* Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and a minimum of 4-5 years reporting and writing experience. A journalism background is strongly preferred.
* Command of AP style.
* Proficiency with MS Word; experience with Adobe Photoshop and InDesign is a plus. Knowledge of content management systems, blogging platforms and basic HTML/CSS preferred. Familiarity with online video, podcasting or other digital storytelling tools preferred.
* Background or interest in photography, art and design preferred.
* Background or interest in conservation and public lands a plus.
* An awareness of and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
